4 Free Dungeons and Dragons adventures fit for all levels: fight off a rampaging Kraken, outwit a Hag, solve the mysterious murder spree within Saffron or end an eternal winter storm in these adventures and hooks.

Local Heroes (1-4)

NPCs: Flesh golem, guards, helmed horror, iron cobras, carrionette, pidlwick II, necromancer or a wizard for Wanda.

Synopsis: People and things have started going missing or are getting killed with strange regularity in Saffron. The local watch is at a loss as nothing ever seems to be breaking in and all the victims seem to be severely mangled as if enormous beasts have torn them to shreds. A curfew has been instituted and everyone is carefully checked going in and out of the city. The druid’s guild has been called upon but they have as of yet been unable to assist, and are now suspected of being involved. And yet, the rampage continues unabated. Wanda the wizard has ambitions of running for mayor and is using the taxidermist’s shop’s creatures as her tools of destruction. She awakens the stuffed beasts, constructs and puppets at night and sends them out to kill and otherwise terrorize the population. She wants to come in as the savior, making the current Mayor of the city seem inept and take his place.

Hooks

One of the player characters receives a letter from a family member stating that things back home aren’t good and that uncle Jachelmina has gone missing. 

A request from the city board/ job board paying a decent amount of money to solve this mystery.

Mr Fluffles has gone missing and its owner, the wealthy Lord Saurinius Blackwell, has requested your aid in retrieving it.

The druid conclave that exists here has sent for help in clearing their name.

Reward: Monetary or an item – within Wanda’s shop, a manual of the flesh golems.

Heroes of the Realm (5-10)

NPCs: a green hag, monks, priests of the orphanage of Tyr, ogres, trolls

Synopsis: The outhouse hides the entrance to the lair of the green hag, Nakesha. There are two methods of entry into the hag’s lair: 

After clearing 10 pints of local special strong spiced ale, the Midnight Meteor, you must fit coins through ale barrel holes. The holes are exactly the same size as the coins the ogre bartender, Umgursh, hands you. The inn where the ogre works is called The Third Eye.

The other method is to enter the outhouse, throw a coin into the filled privy like a wish fountain, and utter the right password. The password is the hag’s name, Nakesha.

The hag is looking to expand her operations and needs to recruit two more hags to form a coven. She does not trust any hags that she knows, and instead wishes to make her own coven. In order to complete this, she needs to “borrow” children to perform the ritual of seeding so that they may turn into hags on their 13th birthday. The nearby orphanage makes for a great hunting ground. 

Hook: An orphanage has had children behaving strangely. Bad dreams, omens and foretelling that prove to be true. The orphanage is run by the Temple of Tyr and they are concerned as these events seem to be gaining more and more frequency. They’ve sent word back to home base that they need help from experts in solving the situation.

Reward: A year’s supply of Midnight Meteor, Scrolls, pieces of body (nails, hair, fingers, toes?) that contain hopes and dreams of the people who came to Nakesha. While in possession of these items, the owner has the charm benefit against those targets or other potential leads into stories or tying back to your character’s story arcs.

Masters of the Realm (11-15)

NPCs: Winter Eladrin, Yetis, Stone Giants, Frost Giants, Ice Mephits, Frost Salamanders, Adult White Dragon.

Synopsis: In a frozen and forgotten kingdom, in the permafrost, a blizzard has started and has not abated in 6 months. The villages and hamlets of the area are now nearing disaster as their supplies are running low, they are unable to replenish their food stock/stuffs and travel has become exceedingly difficult. The source of the issue is a Winter Eladrin who, stricken by grief in their magical ice castle, is now revisiting her life and her memories and has lost control over their power. Her only true companions are ice devils, elementals and creatures that she’s created. The one who keeps her company is Falo, the adult white dragon. The ancient stone giants and forest spirits have grown dull and sleep through the eternal winter that has been created.

Hook: The remote communities at the edge of wilderness need help. The Kingdom needs you to find the source of this winter.

The Lyceum wants to send an expedition and find the source of this powerful magic that has rebuffed all their scrying attempts so far.

The cartographer’s guild wants to map out the area.

An artifact has been recovered from banks of snow that show sigils of a civilization that is thought to be long gone.

Reward:  Money from the city, hoard – magic items from Elsa’s pile, dragon scales, Wand of the Cone of Cold.

Masters of the World (15-20)

NPCs: Sea Elves, tritons and Krakens.

Synopsis: Krakens reproduce sexually, with males able to reproduce after two centuries and females entering reproductive fertility after their first millennia. Once a female becomes fecund, she releases pheromones across the oceans for thousands of nautical miles to sexually mature males. Males who fall under the influence of the pheromones enter a state of psychosis and they immediately seek the female. The resulting frenzy is referred to as the Mandilaan, where the krakens cluster in a single mass, the males tearing through one another to mate with the female at the center of the mass. This process utterly shreds the female kraken, whose destroyed body and fragment shells house the hundreds of eggs that have been fertilized by the destructive process. It is utterly destructive to the environment as well as masses of krakens are a terrifying and catastrophic sight indeed. (source: reddit

The female Kraken Ylusia is desperate not to go through with this process. She has been worshipped by fishermen and local communities and wishes to continue to grow and eventually has aspirations of being a deity. She has been able to reduce her pheromone release but is now being hunted by a particularly ferocious male kraken who goes by the name Ma’afkremo who wishes to ensure his legacy.

Hook: The players receive a telepathic message emanating from the oceans asking for assistance. The image of pain, reward and the depths of the plane of water pass through their eyes.

The Sea Elves have sent for help and need assistance in clearing the issue between two fighting krakens who are apparently competing for territory.

Reward: The boon of Ulysia → underwater breathing, freedom of movement in water. Alternatively, any +3 weapon/armor, shell of the Kraken to make armor, passage into the Plane of Water, a ship made from mother-of-pearl that sails beneath the waters.
